18 March

The late Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Larijani, made a significant contribution to the development of dialogue between the parliamentarians of Russia and Iran and always remained a friend of Russia. This was stated by the Chairwoman of the Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, in a letter of condolence addressed to the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

On Tuesday, March 17, Iranian authorities confirmed that Ali Larijani had been killed in a combined US and Israeli strike.

"The Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation received with deep pain the tragic news of the death of the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Larijani, as a result of the ongoing unprovoked military aggression by the American-Israeli tandem against Iran," Matviyenko wrote. "During his tenure as the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Larijani made a significant contribution to the development of inter-parliamentary dialogue and always remained a friend of Russia."

Matviyenko also noted that she had the opportunity to personally meet with "this prominent statesman and true patriot of his country." She concluded her letter by stating, "I will forever cherish the warmest memories of him. In this time of mourning, on behalf of the senators of the Russian Federation and on my own behalf, I express sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased."
