Media: Turkish Defense Ministry delegation to go to Russia to discuss grain exports from Ukraine

21 June 2022

A delegation from Turkey's Ministry of National Defense intends to travel to Russia this week to discuss the creation of a safe corridor for the export of agricultural products from Ukraine. This was reported on Tuesday by the  A Haber TV channel, citing a source in the office of the Turkish president.

Meanwhile, TRT TV reported last week that Russia, Ukraine and Turkey have formed an emergency communication channel through the defense ministries on the issue of grain exports from Ukrainian ports. According to the TV channel, the countries will appoint their representatives in the rank of generals to carry out the work of this channel. It is said that they will use it to discuss grain export in more detail and as a result, this process will be brought to its logical conclusion.

The issue of creating a "grain corridor" was discussed on June 8 at talks in Ankara by Russian and Turkish Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Mevlut Cavusoglu. Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that Moscow guarantees free passage of ships with Ukrainian grain if Kiev demines its ports and can ensure the export of goods through Russian-controlled ports, such as Berdyansk and Mariupol. He recalled that the problems on the world food market began back in February 2020 and called bluff statements about Russia's alleged blocking of grain in Ukrainian ports.

Turkish authorities reported that they could provide guarantees for the security of deliveries of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea. The TRT TV channel reported last week, citing sources in the administration of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that the mechanism for implementing the roadmap for Ukrainian grain supplies was 80-90 percent ready and if appropriate agreements are reached, it could be launched as soon as possible.
