Mufti of Moscow: Putin’s Decree on Traditional Values Is Gaining Popularity in Islamic Countries

09 December

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Decree No. 809 on preserving and strengthening Russia’s spiritual and moral values is now being translated into the languages of Islamic states and is drawing close attention from their elites, Mufti of Moscow and Head of the Spiritual Assembly of Muslims of Russia (DSMR), Albir Krganov, told TASS after returning from  Saudi Arabia.

“Political and establishment circles in Saudi Arabia are studying our legislation and our direction very carefully. We translated Decree 809 into Arabic and handed it over to highly respected figures there. They treat the document with great respect and say that, in today’s world, it is extremely important to reinforce the commitment to spiritual and moral values. In that sense, we share a common outlook,” the mufti said.

He added that the DSMR had also sent translated copies of the decree to Indonesia and Malaysia after those countries expressed interest. “Indonesia and Malaysia—both Muslim-majority states—asked us for this document as well, and we sent it to them. Their parliaments are genuinely studying it, possibly to draw on certain formulations in the future. I can’t say for sure, but this is something many legislatures do,” Krganov noted.

Putin’s presidential decree of November 9, 2022 (No. 809) approved the principles of state policy aimed at preserving and strengthening traditional Russian spiritual and moral values. These values include life, human dignity, human rights and freedoms, patriotism, civic responsibility, service to the Fatherland, high moral ideals, strong family ties, creative labor, the priority of the spiritual over the material, humanism, compassion, justice, collectivism, mutual assistance and respect, historical memory and continuity between generations, and the unity of the peoples of Russia.
