Naryshkin says US operation in Afghanistan ends with "decisive escape"

03 June 2021

Sergey Naryshkin, Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, predicts that the internal conflict in Afghanistan will worsen in the near future. The head of the Foreign Intelligence Service said this to reporters on Thursday following a joint collegium in Vitebsk between the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service and the Belarusian KGB.

"Look at what's happening in Afghanistan right now. The situation in that country, unfortunately, is deteriorating. This is leading to the aggravation of the internal conflict, we just predict that this conflict will escalate in the near future," Naryshkin said in response to a question by TASS.

The head of the SVR stressed that the conflict in Afghanistan will worsen "as the failed US operation, which 20 years ago was called 'Resolute Support,' ends with such a decisive escape."
