Nebenzya Criticizes Western Silence on Root Causes of Middle East Escalation as Unacceptable

15 April

Russia deems the silence of certain Western nations in the UN Security Council regarding the root causes of the Middle East conflict escalation unacceptable, stated Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, during a Security Council session convened following the Iranian strike on Israeli military installations.

Addressing the Security Council, Nebenzya remarked, "Many of you have failed to directly acknowledge that the current surge in Middle East escalation is occurring against the backdrop of ongoing operations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank of the Jordan River by West Jerusalem, resulting in unprecedented casualties over the past six months."

"We consider such silence of the root causes of the present crisis unacceptable, particularly in light of the escalating situation surrounding Iran, fueled by our American and other counterparts," Nebenzya emphasized.

The Russian diplomat highlighted Israel's non-compliance with UN Security Council resolutions as a display of "clear disrespect." He emphasized, "Failure to adhere to Security Council decisions should not go unpunished and may result in sanctions against the violator."

Calls for restraint

Nebenzya urged all parties involved in the incident with the Iranian attack to exercise restraint, stressing that all issues must be resolved solely through political and diplomatic means.

"We urge all parties involved in the incident to exercise restraint, given the volatile situation in the Middle East region and the evident risks of conflict escalation to a regional level," he stated. Nebenzya underscored that all existing issues should be resolved through diplomatic channels, with constructive international players playing a pivotal role in the process.

Additionally, the Russian diplomatic representation head emphasized the urgency of de-escalation in the region, emphasizing the need to halt the spiral of confrontation and bloodshed. "It is imperative for the international community to exert all necessary efforts to de-escalate the situation promptly. Failure to do so may result in the region being dragged into a cycle of mutual attacks and violence," Nebenzya warned.

He also urged Israel to refrain from resorting to forceful actions in the Middle East.
