Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya stated on Wednesday that providing proper humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip's population is impossible as long as the ceasefire in the enclave is not upheld.
"We have grown weary of reiterating that proper assistance for the people of the Gaza Strip is simply impossible under the ongoing Israeli military operation, fully supported by the United States, which has been in effect for over six months. This is a blatant fact," he said.
"Humanitarian workers are unarmed individuals who cannot confront the army in any capacity. It is utterly inhumane to demand that they perish under attacks, particularly when the Council is incapable of compelling Israel to cease hostilities," Nebenzya pointed out.
The Russian diplomat also expressed his cautious optimism that the proposed mechanism for delivering humanitarian supplies could improve the situation; however, he deemed it "unrealistic under the conditions of intense fighting and ongoing military sweeps." He continued, "It has reached the point where Israeli settlers are invading Palestinian villages, committing murder and arson. In such circumstances, humanitarian workers will continue to lose their lives, and the single-window mechanism proposed will likely offer them little assistance," Nebenzya concluded.
