Muhammadu Sanusi, the Emir of Nigeria's northern Kano state and the leader of the Tijaniyyah religious movement that holds influence in Niger, has put forward the idea of employing people-powered diplomacy to address the ongoing conflict in the country. This approach involves engaging the general populace in diplomatic efforts. Sanusi had previously engaged in discussions with Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of Niger's military. These discussions were reported by the Nigerian Daily Trust newspaper.
"It's time for public diplomacy; we cannot leave the issue of resolving the situation in Niger solely to governments. All Nigerians and Nigeriens should participate in finding a viable solution not only for Niger and Nigeria but also for the entire African continent and humanity," he stated, as quoted by the newspaper.
It was mentioned that Sanusi took the initiative to visit Niger and subsequently briefed Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on the outcomes of the discussions. The Sultan of Damargu, the third most populous city in Niger, also participated in these talks.
The planned mission involving delegations from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United Nations, and the African Union to Niger was not carried out due to entry denial. An emergency summit regarding the situation in Niger Republic is scheduled by ECOWAS to take place on Thursday, August 10, in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.
In late July, a group of military officers from Niger's presidential guard staged a mutiny, leading to the declaration of the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum. Subsequently, the National Council for the Salvation of the Homeland, led by Guard Commander Abdourahamane Tchiani, was established to oversee the governance of the country.
