Novak Offers Good Offices to Help Stabilize Syria

09 September

Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak proposed that Syria’s new authorities make use of Russia’s channels for talks to address issues with Israel and with Syria’s ethnic groups during an expanded meeting between the Russian delegation and Syrian officials, with video carried by state broadcaster Al Ikhbariya.

“We share Damascus’s concern over Israel’s destabilizing actions. We are also concerned about periodic outbreaks of violence targeting religious and national minorities. In this regard, I would like to draw your attention to Russia’s unique capacity to facilitate talks, given our contacts with Israel’s leadership and representatives of all ethnic groups in Syria. We suggest using this factor to exert a stabilizing influence on the situation in the republic,” he said.

“We emphasize the consistency of Moscow’s position in favor of ensuring Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as our readiness to support the process of building state institutions in the Syrian Arab Republic,” Novak added.
