Peskov: Russian Troops in Syria Are Properly Protected

07 March

The safety of Russian military personnel stationed in Syria is being maintained at an appropriate level, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, responding to questions about the escalating situation in the country.

“Our troops’ security is being handled properly,” Peskov said. “As for the ongoing military operation, I wouldn’t want to comment on that — we simply don’t have enough details,” he added.

Earlier, Syrian state channel Al-Ikhbaria reported that clashes were continuing in one of the neighborhoods of Latakia, the provincial capital, between pro-government security forces loyal to Syria’s new leadership and armed supporters of former president Bashar al-Assad.

Later, Latakia’s police chief told Al Jazeera that Syrian security forces, aligned with the new authorities, had taken full control of the city and driven out the pro-Assad fighters.
