President of Uganda: our country can't be against Russia after assistance received from Russians

26 July 2022

President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni said his country cannot be against Russia, given the support the Russians have provided over the past 100 years.

"We respect the Bolsheviks because they supported us, because they supported our anti-colonial movement. Then in 1949 communism came to power in China, and again they supported us, as well as other countries, Cuba and so on. When any questions or problems come up and some people ask us to take an anti-Russian line, we answer - these people have been with us for the last 100 years. How can we be against them?" he said on Tuesday at a press conference following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

He added that Uganda has been able to forgive those countries that colonized Africa and dealt with the slave trade, while not being able to oppose Russia, which has never harmed its people. "We have even forgiven our past enemies who colonized us, who took slaves from here, and we are interacting now with our past adversaries. How can we be against someone who never harmed us?" the president added.
