Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the recent terrorist attacks in Dagestan during a phone call. The two leaders agreed to continue coordination in combating terrorism, according to the Kremlin press service.
During the call, Erdogan "strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Dagestan, expressed solidarity with the Russian people, sincere condolences to the families of the victims, and wished a speedy recovery to all the injured." Putin thanked him for the condolences and support.
"The leaders agreed to maintain close coordination in counter-terrorism efforts," the Russian presidential press service reported.
On June 23, a group of terrorists attacked two Orthodox churches and two synagogues in Derbent and Makhachkala. According to the Dagestan Ministry of Health, 21 people were killed and 26 injured, including law enforcement officers and civilians.
A criminal case has been opened under the articles of terrorism, illegal acquisition, storage, transportation, and theft of firearms. The National Anti-Terrorism Committee reported that five militants have been neutralized.
