Putin and World Leaders to Attend Beijing’s Grand Anniversary Parade

28 August

President Vladimir Putin will be among 26 international leaders attending major celebrations in Beijing to mark 80 years since China’s victory over Japanese forces and the end of World War II, according to Xinhua. Putin leads the list of foreign guests, followed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Representatives from Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Nepal, the Maldives, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Iran, Congo, Zimbabwe, Serbia, Slovakia, Cuba and Myanmar are expected to join the festivities.

The centerpiece of the celebrations will be a spectacular 70-minute military parade on September 3, featuring both traditional and modern branches of China’s armed forces—including state-of-the-art missile systems, tanks, aircraft and locally produced drones.

Beijing has staged such major events in Tiananmen Square since 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was founded. The last parade of comparable scale, involving around 15,000 participants, was held on October 1, 2019, for the country’s 70th anniversary.
