21 November 2022

Russian President Vladimir Putin is confident that Russia and Kazakhstan will continue to strengthen allied relations. The Russian head of state said this in a congratulatory message to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on his re-election as president of Kazakhstan. The text of the message was published Monday on the Kremlin website.

"You have received a convincing mandate of trust from your fellow citizens, opening up new opportunities for the implementation of the state development course you are promoting," Putin addressed Tokayev, wishing him success.

The Russian president noted that "the relations of strategic partnership and alliance between the countries, which are based on good traditions of friendship, good neighborliness and mutual respect, are developing very successfully." "We will continue to work together to improve them," the Russian leader assured.

Extraordinary presidential elections were held in Kazakhstan on Sunday. According to preliminary data from the Central Election Commission, incumbent President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev won the election with more than 80 percent of the vote.

Kazakhstan's next presidential election was supposed to be held in 2024. However, on September 1, Tokayev announced in a message to the nation that an early election would be held. On September 17, he signed a law amending the constitution to limit the president's term to a seven-year period without the right to be re-elected. Previously, the head of the republic could be elected for two terms of five consecutive years.
