Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended his congratulations to Asif Ali Zardari, the leader of the Pakistan People's Party, on his successful election as President of Pakistan, the press service of the Russian Embassy to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan reports.
"President Putin congratulated Asif Ali Zardari on his election as President of Pakistan, highlighting the enduring friendship between Russia and Pakistan. He expressed his confidence in the continued growth and strengthening of their bilateral relations," the Russian diplomatic mission conveyed in a press release.
Asif Ali Zardari, who previously served as the President of Pakistan from 2008 to 2013, was re-elected to the position on March 9. He secured 411 votes in the electoral college, which comprises members from both houses of the parliament.
