Putin: Middle East Leaders Don't Want Conflict to Continue and Worsen

18 October 2023

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in response to questions from journalists, stated that leaders in the Middle East are determined to prevent the Palestinian-Israeli escalation from persisting and escalating into a full-fledged war.

"In regards to my impressions following discussions with the five regional leaders, these conversations were significant and well-timed. To sum it up succinctly, without delving into specifics, I have the sense that none of them want to see this conflict prolonged or escalated. In my view, among the main stakeholders, some inherently do not wish for it, while others seem to have apprehensions, but I perceive a marked lack of inclination to intensify the conflict and transform it into a full-blown war," he stated.

On Monday, Putin engaged in telephone conversations with several leaders, including Presidents Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, Ebrahim Raisi of Iran, Bashar al-Assad of Syria, Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During these discussions, the Russian leader addressed the deteriorating situation in the Middle East and deliberated on matters related to the resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
