Putin: positions of Russia and Germany on Iranian nuclear program are quite close

15 February 2022

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the positions of Moscow and Berlin on the Iranian nuclear program are quite close.

At a press conference following Tuesday talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Russian head of state said he had discussed with him some pressing international issues, including the situation around the Iranian nuclear program.

"We are in constant contact on this issue at the level of foreign ministries, and I should note that our positions here are quite close," the Russian leader stressed.

On January 3, the eighth round of negotiations resumed in Vienna after a New Year's break in order to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program (JCPOA) to its original form and return the United States to this multilateral agreement. The work is being conducted in the format of the participants of the Joint Commission of Iran and the "Five" (Russia, Britain, Germany, China and France) and their separate consultations with the United States without the participation of Iran, which has not yet been ready for direct talks with Washington. The negotiators have already agreed to speed up the process of working on the draft agreement. As expected, the eighth round could be the last, its participants are determined to try to finish the work in February 2022.

Putin also thanked Scholz "for working together" at the meeting in Moscow, a "useful and meaningful dialogue."
