Putin to discuss situation in Afghanistan at SCO summit with Pakistani Prime Minister

Russian President Vladimir Putin at the first personal meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Samarkand will discuss the situation in Afghanistan and a number of other issues, according to Kremlin materials prepared for the event.


"The leaders are expected to substantially discuss a number of international topics, including the situation in Afghanistan, taking into account the existing mechanisms of interaction," the materials said.


Putin will discuss security in the South Caucasus at a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi at the SCO summit in Samarkand, according to Kremlin materials.


"During the talks, in addition to bilateral issues, an exchange of views on topical international and regional issues, including the Syrian settlement, the situation in Afghanistan, security issues in the South Caucasus is also expected," the materials say.


Russia and Iran are preparing a new cooperation agreement to bring it to the level of strategic partnership, the Kremlin said. "A new interstate treaty is being prepared to bring cooperation to the level of strategic partnership," the materials said.


In addition, Putin will discuss the situation in Ukraine and ensuring stability in the Transcaucasia at a bilateral meeting with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan. "The leaders are expected to consider a number of international topics - the implementation of agreements on food security (the "grain deal") reached in Istanbul in July, the situation in Ukraine and Donbass, coordination of efforts to ensure peace and stability in Syria and Transcaucasia," the Kremlin said.
