Qatari Foreign Ministry: Moscow Consultations Format to Enhance Security in Afghanistan

29 September 2023

Qatar anticipates that the Moscow format of consultations will play a crucial role in enhancing peace and security in Afghanistan, a country under the rule of the radical Taliban movement since 2021 (banned in Russia), Yousef Sultan Laram, Director of the Department of Asian Countries at the Qatari Foreign Ministry, said.

"We expect that the 'Moscow' consultations on Afghanistan will facilitate the alignment of perspectives among all participating nations on strategies to establish peace and security in Afghanistan for a brighter future," Laram made these remarks during the fifth meeting of the Moscow format, held in Kazan.

He also underscored that peace in Afghanistan is essential not only for the security of neighboring countries but also for the broader regional stability. Laram emphasized that the international community should exert concerted efforts to "preserve the progress achieved in securing a promising future for the Afghan people."

Following the US announcement of its decision to withdraw its armed forces from Afghanistan in the spring of 2021, the Taliban initiated a significant operation to assume control of the country. On August 15, they peacefully entered Kabul, and on September 7, they unveiled the composition of an interim government, which has not yet received recognition from any nation. Consequently, numerous countries recalled their ambassadors from Afghanistan in response to these developments.
