Russia is actively engaging in discussions aimed at enhancing trade and economic relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development.
ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
On August 21, 2023, the 12th round of consultations between ASEAN and Russia's Economic Ministers was held in Semarang, Indonesia.
During this meeting, the participating parties deliberated on prospects for collaboration across various domains. These included boosting the export of agro-industrial products and energy resources, expanding the reach of free trade agreements between the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and ASEAN, fortifying financial stability, nurturing the growth of tourism and establishing direct flights with interested ASEAN nations, intensifying cooperation in the digital economy and e-commerce.
A statement from the Ministry of Economic Development affirmed, "The Russian side proposed initiating consultations with ASEAN on matters related to the climate agenda and also extended support for Russia's involvement in consultations regarding competition policy."
Parallel to the ASEAN-Russia Economic Ministers consultations, individual meetings were held with representatives from specialized agencies of Thailand and Cambodia in Semarang. These discussions primarily centered around bilateral cooperation, addressing the implementation of joint investment projects, and fostering expanded trade relations with Southeast Asian countries.
