Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin met with the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to discuss advancing a settlement for the region based on relevant United Nations decisions, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry noted that the conversation primarily focused on international efforts to promote a Western Sahara settlement in light of the UN Security Council's adoption of Resolution 2797 on October 31.
The Russian side reiterated its support for the UN's leading role in achieving a mutually acceptable solution to the Western Sahara issue. This solution, Moscow emphasized, should be based on previously agreed UN Security Council resolutions and proceed through procedures consistent with the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, including the right to self-determination.
