The escalating violence in the Middle East carries risks with far-reaching consequences for the entire world, and immediate steps must be taken to halt the fighting to pave the way for a political and diplomatic resolution, according to Gennady Gatilov, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva.
In a statement posted on the Russian mission's Telegram channel, Gatilov stressed that “the growing scale of indiscriminate violence poses unpredictable and irreversible consequences not only for the region but for the world as a whole.” He emphasized the need for “an immediate cessation of hostilities—this is the only path toward creating the conditions for a political and diplomatic settlement, the release of hostages, and the provision of effective humanitarian access to those in need.”
Gatilov also recalled the events of October 7, 2023, when “the world was shocked by the horrific tragedy in Israel, which claimed nearly 1,200 lives and shattered the futures of thousands.” He continued, “A year ago, we witnessed a terrorist attack that we condemned, offering our deepest condolences and support to the people of Israel, the families of the victims, the injured, and the hostages taken. This massacre, which claimed the lives of innocent civilians, including women and children, is utterly inexcusable.”
“The victims of October 7 deserve justice,” Gatilov stated. “But justice cannot be pursued through the blood of the innocent. All parties involved must refrain from provocative actions, exercise restraint, and act responsibly in accordance with the known resolutions of the UN Security Council.”
