Russia's position in the Middle East has not weakened, and Moscow is playing an active role in making the regional situation peaceful, stable and predictable, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin told RTVI.
“I certainly disagree with that notion,” the deputy minister said in response to a corresponding question. “On the contrary—and I’ve already begun to speak about this—Russia, due to the historical experience it possesses over many decades and even centuries, naturally cannot but be involved in all efforts to make the situation in the Middle East peaceful, stable, and predictable.”
“We are able to speak with absolutely all players in the Middle East—analyze our relations with all countries: we can talk with every one of them, convey our position and our points of view, even if we disagree on something, which is, in general, normal. I think this ability is probably our greatest advantage,” he noted. “And even in terms of work on all conflict situations in the Middle East, we are working very actively in all of them.”
Vershinin pointed out that many of the situations in the Middle East are under consideration in the UN Security Council, where nothing can be resolved without Russia. “I can list all the country-specific situations where we are working very actively, both on the ground and in New York. Because many of these situations fall within the purview of the Security Council, where nothing can be decided without us,” he emphasized. “And we will continue to do this.”
