The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed deep regret over the United States’ veto preventing the UN Security Council from stopping the fighting and suffering of civilians in the Gaza Strip.
On September 18, at the initiative of the group of ten non-permanent members, the Security Council made another attempt to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and unimpeded humanitarian access.
“All Security Council delegations, except the United States, voted in favor of the draft resolution, with the US using its veto power for the seventh time since the unprecedented crisis began,” the ministry noted.
“The inability of the Security Council, due to this veto, to halt hostilities and bloodshed and to alleviate the suffering of civilians is deeply regrettable and disappointing,” the statement said.
The resolution had widespread international support but was blocked solely by the US, which argued the draft failed to condemn Hamas and did not recognize Israel’s right to self-defense. The veto marks the sixth or seventh such US action against Security Council resolutions aimed at ending the Gaza conflict.
