Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russia's efforts have helped achieve a political settlement and cessation of hostilities in Libya, and Moscow looks forward to resuming full-fledged cooperation between the military departments of the two countries.

"I am confident that the Libyan people, friendly to Russia, will overcome the years-long crisis, which arose as a result of brutal outside interference. From the very beginning of the conflict, the Russian Federation has made serious efforts for its political settlement and cessation of hostilities, which has been successfully implemented through the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin," Shoigu said on Friday at talks with Abdгl Hamid Dbeibeh, chairman of Libya's Government of National Unity.

According to the Russian military chief, "relations between Russia and Libya have a long history." "I consider your visit to Moscow to be the first step toward restoring full-scale cooperation between the military departments of the two countries," Shoigu said.

He expressed confidence that the talks would give a serious impetus to the development of mutually beneficial cooperation.

Opening the meeting, Shoigu congratulated Dbeibeh on his election as Chairman of the Government of National Unity.
