Shoigu: weapons left by Western troops in Afghanistan can get to terrorists

11 February 2022

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has voiced concern over the possible use by terrorists of weapons left behind by Western coalition troops in Afghanistan.

"I would also like to recall the sad experience of pumping weapons into individual states. Let me remind you that not so long ago almost $80 billion worth of weapons were left in Afghanistan. If we speak about Javelins, antitank guns, then there were more than 100 of them left in Afghanistan. If we talk about man-portable air defense systems against aircraft, more than 150 of them were left," Shoigu said on Friday at a meeting with British Defense Minister Ben Wallace.

According to Shoigu, "all this is certainly a threat today, given the fact that just recently the number of ISIS fighters (former name of the Islamic State terrorist group banned in Russia - TASS) in Afghanistan has doubled."

"And it's difficult for us to understand where and in which hands these weapons will fall. We wouldn't like this topic to fade into the background. So would the topic of refugees from Afghanistan. As well as the topic of drug trafficking from Afghanistan," stressed Shoigu.
