Taliban Expect Russia’s Support in Countering Western Pressure

26 November

The Taliban (banned in Russia) are looking to Russia for assistance in neutralizing pressure from Western countries and the United States, according to Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of the Taliban's interim government.

“We have worked to create conditions for increasing Afghan exports abroad and attracting foreign investment to Afghanistan. As you know, since the victory of the Islamic Emirate, the US and Western countries have exerted all kinds of pressure on us. Therefore, we expect the Russian Federation to help us counter this pressure,” Baradar stated during a meeting with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu.

Baradar emphasized the stability achieved under Taliban governance, asserting that Afghanistan's security forces have eradicated the Islamic State (IS) within the country, forcing its remnants to relocate elsewhere. “We can assure you that the Islamic Emirate is a reliable economic partner,” he added.

On November 25, a Russian delegation, including Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, held four rounds of meetings with Afghan officials. The discussions included Vice Premiers Mohammad Abdul Kabir and Abdul Ghani Baradar, Defense Minister Mohammad Yaqub, and Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani.
