Trump Proposes Middle Eastern Countries Finance Relocation of Palestinians from Gaza

05 February

US President Donald Trump suggested that the relocation of residents from Gaza could be funded by wealthy Middle Eastern countries.

"Gaza should not go through a process of reconstruction and resettlement by the same people who fought over it and lived there in misery," Trump said during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington. He proposed that neighboring countries in the region could allocate resources and prepare areas to host 1.8 million Palestinians currently living in Gaza.

"It could be one large area or several places where people can live in comfort and peace. We want to create something truly remarkable for them," Trump added.

He also claimed that Palestinians would be happy to leave Gaza if given the opportunity. Trump expressed confidence that relocation to Jordan, Egypt, or other countries would be a better option for Palestinians than returning to the war-torn enclave.

However, this plan has been met with resistance from Arab countries and Palestinian leaders. Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi stated that the kingdom is firmly opposed to the forced displacement of Palestinians. Egypt similarly rejected any violation of Palestinian rights, including their right to their own land.  Hamas also dismissed Trump’s relocation proposal as unacceptable.
