UK Considering Recognition of Palestine Before Israel Negotiations Conclude

02 February

The United Kingdom may potentially recognize an independent Palestinian state before the conclusion of ongoing negotiations with Israel, provided that the leaders of the Hamas movement vacate the Gaza Strip post-ceasefire. This assertion was made by British Foreign Minister David Cameron in an interview with Associated Press.

Cameron suggested that the initial step towards this recognition could be a "pause in hostilities," which would evolve into a "permanent and credible ceasefire." He argued that a two-state solution to the conflict is unattainable as long as Gaza remains under the control of those responsible for the attack on Israel on October 7.

The foreign minister expressed that recognizing Palestine should not occur at the outset of negotiations, nor should it be delayed until the end of the process. He emphasized the importance of offering Palestinians hope for a better future, including the establishment of their own state, which he described as "absolutely essential for long-term peace and security in the region."
