Ulyanov: Russia Is Entitled to Western Security Guarantees

18 August

The West should provide Russia with security guarantees as robust as those promised to Ukraine, said Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna.

“Many EU leaders emphasize that a future peace agreement must ensure reliable security guarantees for Ukraine. Russia agrees with this. But it has every right to expect that Moscow will also receive effective security guarantees,” he wrote on Telegram.

Ulyanov argued it is a mistake for Western countries not to begin discussing such guarantees for Russia, adding that any commitments must be “far more reliable than the notorious promises” about NATO’s non‑expansion eastward.

His comments follow a virtual meeting of the “coalition of the willing,” which reaffirmed readiness to deploy a multinational “deterrence force” to Ukraine once hostilities end. The group also “welcomed President Donald Trump’s commitment to provide security guarantees to Ukraine,” saying the coalition would play a vital role through multinational forces alongside other measures.
