03 April

Geir Pedersen, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria, has strongly denounced the recent attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. In a statement released from Geneva, he urged all parties involved to demonstrate restraint and refrain from escalating tensions.

"I unequivocally condemn the assault on the diplomatic premises of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Damascus," Pedersen stated, emphasizing "the fundamental principle of respecting the inviolability of diplomatic and consular facilities and personnel, as dictated by international law."

In light of ?the escalating violence and growing threats in the region", Pedersen stressed "the importance of adhering strictly to international legal obligations." He underscored the critical need for all parties to "exercise utmost restraint and to refrain from actions that could exacerbate the situation further."

Pedersen warned that any miscalculation has the potential to trigger a broader conflict with severe ramifications for Syria and the wider region.
