Almost half of Yemen’s children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition as the country’s decade-long conflict continues, UNICEF’s representative in Yemen, Peter Hawkins, said during a briefing in Geneva.
"Every second child under five in Yemen is affected by acute malnutrition. More than 537,000 of them are experiencing severe acute malnutrition—an agonizing, life-threatening, and entirely preventable condition. Malnutrition weakens the immune system, stunts growth, and robs children of their future. In Yemen, this is not just a health crisis—it is a death sentence for thousands," Hawkins stated, marking ten years since the conflict began.
He also highlighted that 1.4 million pregnant and breastfeeding women in Yemen are malnourished.
"Our funding appeal for 2025 is currently only 25% covered. Without urgent resources, we will be unable to maintain even the most basic services to address the growing needs," the UNICEF official warned.
