15 October 2020

Russia expects that stabilization of the situation in Kyrgyzstan will take place soon and within the framework of the republic's constitution, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova told a briefing.

"The Russian side continues to closely follow the development of the situation in friendly Kyrgyzstan. Today the President of this country Mr. [Sooronbay] Jeenbekov made an official announcement about his resignation. We expect the situation in the republic to stabilize as soon as possible. We express hope that this process will take place within the framework of the constitution and national legislation," the diplomat said.

Zakharova noted that Russia as a strategic partner and ally of Kyrgyzstan "has provided and will continue to provide all necessary assistance for this".

On October 4 parliamentary elections were held in Kyrgyzstan, and on the night of October 6 representatives of parties that didn't pass to the parliament organized mass disorders in Bishkek, captured buildings of state organizations, released ex-president Almazbek Atambayev and a number of other politicians including new prime-minister Sadyr Zhaparov from a detention center. Prime Minister Kubatbek Boronov and Parliament Speaker Dastanbek Jumabekov resigned. After that, Jeenbekov introduced the state of emergency in Bishkek, and the CEC of the republic declared the results of the voting null and void. The date of the new voting is to be announced before November 6. On Tuesday and Wednesday, new speaker and head of government were elected in Kyrgyzstan.
