Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova emphasized that one of Russia's main priorities during its presidency in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in 2024 will be the enhancement of mechanisms to counter security threats.
Speaking at a briefing, Zakharova stated, "It is important that in the law enforcement and military spheres among the Russian priorities [of the CIS presidency will be] the improvement of mechanisms of joint counteraction to traditional and new challenges and threats to security, strengthening of the external borders of the commonwealth, capacity building of specialized multilateral mechanisms, programs."
She further highlighted that the necessary legal foundation for this work at a new level was established during the October CIS summit in Bishkek. "Russia will continue its efforts to pair integration processes in the CIS space, in particular, to deepen its contacts with the CSTO and the SCO in the field of security," Zakharova added.
Zakharova concluded by announcing that the text of the concept would be posted on official internet resources in the coming days, with the official presentation of Russia's presidency priorities scheduled for January 23, 2024, at the CIS headquarters in Minsk.
Russia will assume the CIS chairmanship from Kyrgyzstan on January 1, 2024.
