Algeria Opposes US Gaza Resolution Due to Lack of Ceasefire Demand

22 March

Algeria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, stated that Algeria voted against the American draft resolution on the Gaza Strip in the UN Security Council because it did not include a demand for a ceasefire. Bendjama emphasized that the UN Security Council should have the authority to enforce a ceasefire in Gaza, which was a key reason for Algeria's opposition.

He also pointed out that the US did not consider several Algerian proposals when drafting the resolution. This, along with the absence of a ceasefire demand, led Algeria to oppose the document.

Russia and China used their veto power in the UN Security Council to block the draft Middle East resolution submitted by the United States. This resolution identified the urgent need for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire but did not include a corresponding demand or call. According to a TASS correspondent, 11 out of 15 members of the Security Council voted in favor of the document.

In addition to Russia and China, Algeria was the only country to oppose the document. Guyana abstained from the vote. The remaining countries, including the United Kingdom, Malta, Mozambique, the Republic of Korea, Ecuador, France, Japan, Mozambique, Slovenia, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, cast their votes in favor of the resolution.
