Iran hopes to sign cooperation agreement with Russia within several months

The Iranian side hopes to sign a finalized comprehensive cooperation agreement with Russia within a few months, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Monday.


"We hope that within a few months we will witness the signing of this document," the ministry's press service quoted him as saying.


According to the diplomat, "several years ago there was a need to finalize the treaty." "The issue was discussed during the previous visit [of Russian foreign minister] Sergey Lavrov [to Iran], and now in Tehran we are preparing the final points of the agreement," he noted. - "After this process is completed and approved inside the country, we will send it to Moscow".


The agreement on the basis of relations and principles of cooperation between Russia and Iran was signed in March 2001 and was automatically renewed every five years. On September 24, 2020, during his visit to Moscow, then Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stated that before the next extension, the Iranian side intended to consider the possibility of updating the document to reflect current realities.


Lavrov paid an official visit to Iran on April 13. The Russian foreign minister and the Iranian foreign minister signed an agreement on the establishment and conditions of cultural centers. The Russian diplomat was also received by then-President Hassan Rouhani and speaker of the Majlis (parliament) Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
