Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, to discuss the security landscape in the Middle East and the upcoming centennial of their diplomatic ties.
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, "an exchange of views took place on a range of topical issues on the international and regional agenda, with an emphasis on the Palestinian-Israeli settlement, the situation surrounding Iran, and the situation in Yemen." The two ministers expressed "the need to encourage consolidated international efforts to reduce military-political tensions and prevent further escalation in the Middle East."
The discussion also touched upon the "high dynamics of political dialogue between Moscow and Riyadh," with both sides stressing the importance of "intensifying joint work to develop trade, economic, investment, and cultural-humanitarian cooperation."
The diplomats highlighted the historic significance of the upcoming week, noting the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Saudi Arabia, which occurred on February 19, 1926.
