The West has launched a campaign to rewrite history and revise the results of World War II, while the CIS countries intend to fight this activity, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday at the opening ceremony of an exhibition to mark the 30th anniversary of Russia's diplomatic relations with CIS countries.
"I will particularly highlight the tasks we face in connection with attempts to falsify the history of World War II, the Great Patriotic War. We have formed a commission of historians to deal with such attempts," he said.
The minister noted that at the moment in Europe and border countries "there are campaigns that aim to rewrite history, to cross out the exploits" of the fighters against Nazism. "Of course, as responsible countries and states that bore the brunt of the victory over fascism, we must not allow this," Lavrov stressed.
Challenges for the CIS countries
According to the minister, the challenges that the CIS countries faced after the collapse of the Soviet Union were unprecedented, but the states managed to build a solid foundation for partnership. "The challenges that we all faced after the collapse of the Soviet Union were unprecedented, but nevertheless, through joint efforts, the will of our peoples, the leaders of our states, we have built and preserved <...> a solid foundation of our allied, strategic partnership, which helps solve current problems in all our countries," he said.
According to Lavrov, systems of cooperation between partners are also built among members of the CSTO and the Eurasian Economic Union. "There is a well-built, reliable system of development of our social and economic contacts, the development of our contacts in the field of security, interaction between law enforcement agencies to ensure the rule of law throughout the territory of our states and, of course, humanitarian and cultural relations and those traditions that have taken root in the CIS," Lavrov added.
According to the minister, today there are a lot of interesting projects in the CIS, which are considered promising. Among them the Minister mentioned the creation of an international organization for the Russian language. "I am also referring to those initiatives, which during his recent visit to the Russian Federation were put forward by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich Tokayev, including the creation of an international organization for the Russian language. These initiatives are being discussed now. I am sure that solutions will be found that will allow us to advance our cooperation in all directions," he said.
