Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev has attributed the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria to significant errors in governance during the brief with reporters.
“The internal situation was directly tied to the administration, to the government led by former President Bashar al-Assad. Unfortunately, the Syrian army proved incapable in this regard, which likely reflects the governance missteps made during his rule,” Medvedev explained.
He also voiced skepticism about the prospects of peaceful coexistence among Syria's diverse ethnic and religious communities. According to Medvedev, the challenge of reconciling the interests of Sunnis, Shias, Alawites, Druze, and Christians remains unresolved.
“In the model previously employed by Assad's father and later by Assad himself, coexistence was achieved for a time—though I won’t comment on the cost or consequences,” Medvedev noted. “But whether it can be achieved under the leadership of the new opposition forces is something I deeply doubt”.
