Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation: Work in the Middle East is stalled due to the egoism of the West

26 June

The egoistic policy of the West is hindering the joint work of all key international players to resolve conflicts in the Middle East, Africa, and other regions. This was stated by the First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky.

"We <...> emphasize that the destructive and egoistic policy of Western states is the main factor that hinders international cooperation and the construction of a more just world, generating problems for entire countries and regions. Because of this, the much-needed joint work of all key international players to resolve conflicts in the Middle East, Africa, and other regions, reduce global inequality, eliminate the threats of terrorism and drug crime is stalled," he said during a discussion at the Valdai Club dedicated to the place and role of the UN in the changing world order, timed to coincide with the anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in 1945.

The diplomat noted that the UN is a kind of "mirror reflecting the world and the state of international relations," and since they are currently in a deep crisis, the UN is experiencing an equally deep crisis. "It cannot be otherwise in conditions where the West, still blinded by the idea of its own exceptionalism, is trying to maintain dominance in the world and impose its will on the states of the global South. Despite the change of administration in the White House, the United States still demands unquestioning loyalty from all its allies or satellites, even to the detriment of its national interests," he continued. According to Polyansky, the UN also suffers from all this: the UN Charter and Security Council decisions are interpreted by the collective West in a distorted and selective manner, and many Security Council resolutions are completely ignored. "Among them is Resolution 2202, which approved the Minsk package of measures on Ukraine. Resolution 1244 on Kosovo. We can talk endlessly about the sabotage of the resolution on the Middle East. It is enough to recall the statement of former US Permanent Representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield that Security Council Resolution 2728 demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is allegedly not legally binding," he recalled.

The diplomat emphasized that the Russian side observes all these alarming trends in the UN Security Council with its own eyes literally every day. "So far, to be honest, we do not see any compelling reasons to expect that Western delegations will suddenly come to their senses, be imbued with the spirit of the founding fathers of the UN and remember the responsibility for the future of humanity that motivated them. The problem is not only that they have not yet seen the light and have not accepted the processes of transformation that are happening in the world. What is very much hindering is that today Western states are completely devoid of strategic vision, the ability to make difficult compromises for the common good, which their leaders were ready to do in the past," Polyansky said.

Strengthening the role of the UN

According to Polyansky, the Russian Federation regularly explains to its colleagues in the five permanent members of the UN Security Council that this situation can and should be corrected with good will. "Russia has repeatedly proposed specific steps for discussion aimed at restoring trust and stabilizing the international situation, and has never shied away from dialogue and diplomacy. One of the possible recipes for correcting the aforementioned unfavorable trends is precisely to strengthen the role of the UN in world affairs, which, in our deep conviction, should be strengthened," he emphasized.
