Peskov: Putin Committed to Facilitating De-escalation in the Middle East

03 March

Russian President Vladimir Putin is using all available diplomatic means to promote de-escalation in the Middle East, according to statements made by Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov.

"Putin is making every effort to promote at least some measure of relief from the current tensions," Peskov told reporters. "During his conversations yesterday, he made it clear that he will use Russia's open lines of communication with the Iranian leadership to relay the deep concerns of regional partners regarding strikes on their infrastructure."

On March 2, Putin spoke by telephone with his counterparts from Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran. Strikes were directed at major urban centers, including Tehran, with the White House citing imminent missile and nuclear threats as the justification for the intervention. The operation resulted in the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other prominent members of the Iranian leadership.

In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps initiated a wide-ranging retaliatory campaign, striking targets within Israel as well as United States military and logistical assets located in Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
