Rahmon and Putin discussed expanding cooperation between Tajikistan and Russia

Presidents of Russia and Tajikistan Vladimir Putin and Emomali Rahmon on Tuesday at a meeting in Dushanbe discussed expanding cooperation in the field of security, strengthening the Tajik-Afghan border and other topical issues. This was reported by the press service of the Tajik leader.

 

During the talks, the press service pointed out, the presidents paid special attention to the development of the situation in Afghanistan and the situation on the Tajik-Afghan border. "In this context, Emomali Rahmon and Vladimir Putin discussed issues of expanding cooperation in the security sphere, including through military and military-technical cooperation, as well as in the field of defense construction, especially in terms of modernization of Tajikistan's Armed Forces and strengthening the protection of the Tajik-Afghan border," the report said. The parties exchanged views on other topical issues of the international and regional agenda.

 

The leaders of Russia and Tajikistan noted positive trends in relations between the two countries over the past 30 years after the establishment of diplomatic ties, stressing the importance of "maintaining regular confidential political dialogue and contacts at the highest and highest levels".

 

The presidents praised the level of cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian sphere, particularly in education, science, culture and health care. Rakhmon and Putin noted the great work being done in Tajikistan to maintain and develop the Russian language and culture, as well as the Russian educational space. "The leaders of Tajikistan and Russia, taking into account the real needs of today, recognized the need for further practical increase in the cultural and humanitarian component of cooperation between the two countries," the report stressed.


Putin arrived in Dushanbe on a working visit, these negotiations were the second face-to-face meeting of the leaders this year. The previous meeting was held on May 16, in the margins of the CSTO anniversary summit in Moscow. Back then, Putin and Rahmon also discussed bilateral issues and the situation in the region, including the security situation. In addition, the presidents are in constant contact by telephone: six conversations have already taken place this year.


The Russian president will stay in Dushanbe until Wednesday morning, after which he will fly to Ashgabat. There he will speak at the Caspian Summit, which will be attended by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
