Speech by President Vladimir Putin at the Victory Day Parade – Full Text

09 May

Dear citizens of Russia,

Dear veterans,
Honored guests,
Comrades soldiers and sailors, sergeants and petty officers, warrant officers and ensigns,
Comrades officers, generals, and admirals,

I congratulate you on the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War!

Today, we are united by a shared sense of joy and sorrow, pride and gratitude, and profound respect for the generation that defeated Nazism—at the cost of millions of lives—and won peace and freedom for the world.

We faithfully preserve the memory of this historic, triumphant event. As heirs to the victors, we mark May 9 as our most heartfelt and sacred holiday—a day of national unity, pride, and remembrance for every family and every one of us.

Our fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers defended the Homeland. They entrusted us with protecting our country, standing united, and firmly upholding our national interests, our thousand-year history, our culture, and traditional values—everything we hold dear and sacred.

We remember the lessons of the Second World War and will never accept attempts to rewrite its history or justify the executioners while slandering the true victors.

It is our duty to defend the honor of the Red Army’s soldiers and commanders—the heroic representatives of many nations—who will forever be remembered as Russian soldiers in world history.

Russia has always stood—and will always stand—as a barrier against Nazism, Russophobia, and antisemitism. We will continue to resist those who promote these destructive, aggressive ideologies.

Truth and justice are on our side. The country, the people, and society as a whole support the participants of the special military operation. We are proud of their courage, determination, and the strength of spirit that has always led us to victory.

Dear friends,

The Soviet Union bore the brunt of the enemy's most savage and relentless attacks. Millions of peaceful citizens took up arms and stood their ground on every front—on the heights, the bridgehead, and the battle lines—determining the outcome of the war through decisive victories at Moscow and Stalingrad, on the Kursk Bulge, the Dnepr, and elsewhere.

We remember the bravery of those who defended Belarus and were the first to confront the enemy; the resilience shown in the defenses of the Brest Fortress, Mogilev, Odessa, Sevastopol, Murmansk, Tula, and Smolensk; the heroism of the people of besieged Leningrad; and the valor of those who fought on the front lines, in partisan units, and in the resistance, as well as the workers who relocated factories under fire and labored tirelessly behind the front lines.

The Nazis' plans to conquer the Soviet Union collapsed against the steel unity of our people. Heroism was widespread. Every Soviet republic bore the heavy burden of war together.

The people of Central Asia and the Caucasus made tremendous contributions. Trains from these regions delivered crucial supplies to the front without pause. Hospitals were set up, and hundreds of thousands of evacuees found shelter and warmth—both in homes and in hearts.

We honor every veteran of the Great Patriotic War and bow our heads in remembrance of those who gave their lives for victory—the sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, loved ones and comrades.

We bow our heads before our fellow soldiers who died bravely in the righteous fight for Russia.

Let us observe a moment of silence.

Dear friends,

The Second World War engulfed nearly 80% of the world’s population. The complete defeat of Nazi Germany, militarist Japan, and their allies was achieved through the joint efforts of the Allied nations.

We will always remember that the opening of the Second Front in Europe—after the decisive Soviet victories—brought the war closer to its end. We deeply value the contribution of Allied soldiers, resistance fighters, and the courageous people of China—all who fought for a peaceful future.

Dear friends,

We will always look to our veterans as role models—for their devotion to the Motherland, their unwavering defense of home and humanity, and their commitment to justice. We will carry these traditions in our hearts and pass them on to future generations.

Our unity—in peace and war—will remain the foundation of our strength, helping us achieve our strategic goals and work for the greatness and prosperity of Russia.

Glory to the people of victory!
Happy holiday!
Happy Victory Day!
Hurrah!
