Turkey and Saudi Arabia determine to start a new period of cooperation

23 June 2022

Turkey and Saudi Arabia have agreed to start a new era of cooperation in bilateral relations. This was said in a statement issued following talks between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud in Ankara on Wednesday.

"Various aspects of bilateral relations were discussed during the talks. The determination to start a new era of bilateral relations between the countries, including political, economic, military, defense and cultural aspects, was most strongly emphasized. The parties expressed their desire to cooperate in the energy sector, particularly in the areas of petrochemicals and refining," the statement said.

The Saudi side "thanked Turkey for supporting Riyadh's candidacy to host Expo 2023".

Erdogan visited Saudi Arabia in late April, paying his first official visit since 2017. He called his visit the beginning of a new period in relations between Ankara and Riyadh.

Relations between the two countries deteriorated sharply after journalist Jamal Hashkaji was killed at the Saudi Consulate General in Istanbul in 2018. Riyadh accused Ankara of trying to politicize and internationalize the criminal case.
