US State Department: Efforts to Discourage Cooperation Between Russia and Algeria

04 February

The US administration is actively seeking to influence the Algerian government to limit its interaction with Russia. This was confirmed on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, by Robert Palladino, the Senior Bureau Official for the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, during a hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"Whenever our partners collaborate with our strategic adversaries, we try to discourage them from doing so," Palladino stated in response to questions regarding Russia-Algeria security cooperation. He emphasized that whether the partner is China or Russia, the US must actively counter such engagement to protect American interests and sovereignty in the region.

The hearing was on countering terrorism in North Africa.
