As a designated observer state within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Afghanistan views the restoration of its active participation as a vital step forward, Afghanistan's Ambassador to Russia Gul Hassan told TASS in an interview.
When asked whether the Afghan side considers a return to cooperation with the SCO feasible, the ambassador offered a clear confirmation. "Yes, Afghanistan holds observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and, in line with that status, should participate in its meetings," the diplomat stated in his inaugural interview since taking over the diplomatic mission in Moscow.
The ambassador noted that, largely due to diplomatic efforts of Moscow and Beijing, a majority of the SCO member states have reached a consensus on the necessity of bringing Afghanistan back into the fold. He suggested that the organization now recognizes the practical value of Afghanistan's active engagement.
"We are looking forward to Afghanistan's participation in the organization’s upcoming meetings," he added.
