Afghan authorities are interested in Russian oil supplies by barter

15 August 2022

Afghanistan is interested in reaching an agreement on barter supplies of Russian oil in case Moscow will be interested in Afghan goods, Afghan Minister of Industry and Trade Nuriddin Azizi told RIA Novosti.

He earlier told RIA Novosti that Afghanistan plans to buy about a million barrels of oil from Russia.

"The most important project for us would be oil and gas. We would also like to consider the option of barter trade, provided Russia has a need for some Afghan products," Azizi said.

A delegation from the Afghan ministry of industry and trade arrived in Moscow on Sunday. The business mission sent by the Taliban government (the Taliban* is under UN sanctions for terrorist activities) will start negotiations with their Russian counterparts in Moscow on Monday.

Russian Ambassador in Kabul Dmitry Zhirnov told RIA Novosti earlier that the Afghan side plans to discuss supplies of oil, grain and sunflower oil. A source in Moscow told RIA Novosti that the talks are scheduled until Wednesday and will be held at the Russian Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Energy, among others.
