An Afghan government delegation formed by the Taliban has arrived in Doha to participate in UN working group meetings on counter-narcotics and private sector development in Afghanistan. This was announced on Monday by Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hafiz Zia Ahmad.
The delegation includes representatives from the Foreign Ministry, Interior Ministry, Health Ministry, Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Central Bank. According to Ahmad, the Afghan officials plan to hold several meetings with representatives of countries participating in the UN-led negotiation process on Afghanistan, as well as with international organizations, to discuss drug prevention and control, treatment of drug addiction, and private sector cooperation.
Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, had previously announced that the third meeting of the UN Working Group on Counter-Narcotics and the second meeting of the Working Group on Private Sector Development in Afghanistan would take place in Doha from June 30 to July 1, as part of the UN-initiated negotiation process.
From June 30 to July 1, 2024, Doha hosted the third meeting of special envoys on Afghanistan, held at the initiative of UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The Russian delegation was led by the President’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Director of the Second Asia Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Zamir Kabulov. For the first time, representatives of the Taliban, who seized power in Afghanistan, were present at the talks.
