African Union Suspends Niger Following Coup

22 August 2023

The African Union's Peace and Security Council has announced the suspension of Niger's activities within the organization, Al Arabiya reports.

"The Republic of Niger is suspended from all activities of the African Union, its organs, and institutions until the effective restoration of constitutional order in the country," the communique reads.

This decision, taken during the August 14 meeting of the council, underscores the AU's response to the ongoing political turmoil in Niger.

The Peace and Security Council expressed support for diplomatic efforts led by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to peacefully restore stability in Niger.

"We support ECOWAS actions to restore order in Niger through diplomatic means," stated the council.  It also indicated "its assessment of the potential consequences of a military intervention by ECOWAS forces."

Additionally, the African Union urged the international community not to recognize the legitimacy of the military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. This move is in response to the political situation that unfolded when a group of military officers from Niger's presidential guard took control and formed the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, led by Guard Commander Abdourahamane Tchiani.

ECOWAS leaders have imposed sanctions on the coup plotters and called for President Bazoum's release. They also indicated the possibility of using military force if necessary. ECOWAS Commissioner for Peace and Security Abdel Fatau Musah recently announced that a specific date for military intervention in Niger has been determined, although the official announcement is still pending.
