Ahmed Al-Sharaa, also known by his alias Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, leader of the armed factions that recently seized power in Damascus, met on Sunday with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen.
During their discussion, Al-Sharaa emphasized the “need to focus on the unity and reconstruction of Syria,” according to a statement from the political administration under the new leadership, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The leader of the new government also called for a review of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which outlines a framework for a political settlement in Syria. He highlighted the “necessity of restoring state institutions to build a strong and effective system.” Furthermore, Al-Sharaa stressed the “importance of creating safe conditions for the return of refugees” and providing both economic and political support for their reintegration.
At the end of November, opposition armed groups launched a large-scale offensive against Syrian government forces in Aleppo and Idlib provinces. By December 7, they had captured Aleppo, Hama, Daraa, and Homs, and entered Damascus the following day as government forces withdrew. President Bashar al-Assad resigned and fled the country.
On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who had led the so-called Salvation Government established by the opposition in Idlib since January, announced Al-Sharaa’s appointment as head of the transitional Syrian government. This transitional period is set to last until March 1, 2025.
