Ahmed Al-Sharaa, leader of the armed factions that seized control in Damascus and widely known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani, has called for Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, banned in Russia) to be delisted from international terrorist organizations.
“It is necessary to remove Hayat Tahrir al-Sham from the terrorist organization lists compiled by the UN, the US, the European Union, and the UK,” Al Arabiya quoted him as saying. Al-Sharaa argued that HTS “should not be considered a terrorist group.”
He also added, “Sanctions imposed on Syria must be lifted. The country is exhausted by war and no longer poses a threat to its neighbors or to the West.”
At the end of November, opposition forces, primarily HTS, launched a major offensive against Syrian army positions. On December 8, they entered Damascus, leading Bashar al-Assad to resign as Syria's president and flee the country. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, previously the head of the so-called Salvation Government in Idlib province, announced his appointment as the head of Syria's transitional government, which is set to remain in place until March 1, 2025.
